Did Chris Downey make it across the English Channel?

Last Saturday, April 17, LightHouse held its annual Cycle for Sight fundraiser for Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC). After cancelling Cycle for Sight in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were thrilled to bring the event back, this year in a virtual format.

Participants first gathered Saturday morning on Zoom for an opening ceremony, before getting down to business and exercising for at least 90 minutes, by hiking, running, swimming, and yes cycling, before gathering for an afterparty in the afternoon.

Two weeks ago we brought to you the story of Chris Downey, renowned architect who is blind and the immediate past LightHouse Board President and current board member. Chris has taken part in Cycle for Sight for the past ten years. This year, with the event’s virtual format, Chris used his garage rowing machine, along with some high-tech gadgets, to row across the English Channel a distance of 33.8 kilometers.

So how did it go? HE DID IT!!
Chris says:

“It was a fun experience and I’m thrilled it paid off with this level of support to the LightHouse and Enchanted Hills Camp. the (virtual) water was splendid as was the weather. The row was intense – especially the extra 15K beyond my weekly Saturday row. All went according to plan and I was able to knock it out without injury or total exhaustion. That said, there was nothing left in the tank had there been any challenge to row back to the other side! I could sense a little protest from my body when resuming my regular workout routine this morning – no pain, just lethargy!”

Oh and what’s more? Chris raised $15,500 for EHC.

Local running Club’s “White Dress Run” supports Enchanted Hills Camp

On February 24, East Bay Hash House Harriers, a Bay Area Running Club, held an Enchanted Hills Camp Fundraiser in honor of Christie Ivanstrom, a member who is blind. The run was a farewell, as Christie and her husband Tim are moving out of the Bay Area. To mark the occasion, they held a “White Dress Run” that raised $1,290 for the remarkable programs of EHC. In accordance with local ordinance the event was held socially distanced, with staggered start times and masked, of course.

Enchanted Hills Receives $30,000 Through Cycle for Sight

Enchanted Hills Camp will again reap the benefits of funding made possible through Rotary Club of Napa’s Cycle for Sight 2016 Bike Ride. We’re deeply grateful to the Rotary Club of Napa for their award of $30,000, our share of the proceeds raised by the thousands of cyclists who participated in this year’s event.

Ride with Us: Join Team LightHouse

Ride solo or on a tandem. Ride 15, 25, or 50 miles. Ride as a beginner or a pro! All are welcome to join Team LightHouse for a fun day of cycling and fundraising. Together we will support the programs of Enchanted Hills Camp.

What: Enjoy the beauty of Napa and the challenge of a 15, 25 or 50 mile bike ride with 2,000 other cyclists. Then finish up with great music, wine, food and partying.

When: Saturday, April 16

Where: The ride starts and finishes at Justin Siena High School, 4026 Maher Street, Napa, CA 94558, where the Wine and Music Festival will be in full swing! During the festival enjoy wine tasting from Napa Valley wineries, beer tasting from local microbreweries and local cuisine from Napa Valley restaurants, all while listening and dancing to the sounds of “Pride and Joy”.

By asking friends, neighbors, coworkers and family to support their ride, team members have been raising vital funds for Enchanted Hills Camp for the Blind. Members who raise $300 or more receive a free stay the evening before the ride at Enchanted Hills including meals. There’s also a prize for the person who raises the most contributions. Contribute to LightHouse’s Campaign for a 21st Century LightHouse

Program and Naming Opportunities at the New LightHouse

Many of you know that the LightHouse is undergoing a campaign to move our San Francisco headquarters to a new Mid-Market location with a larger footprint for expanded programs and located a few feet from the Civic Center BART/Muni station for the best accessibility.

The new building and its design process is the focus of this month’s San Francisco Magazine, in an in-depth and fascinating discussion of how we’ve designed and built the perfect headquarters for our next century.

Why are we building a new LightHouse? Newly-blind neighbors and experienced blind residents will welcome what will surely be the most advanced blindness center in the West. Under one roof we’ll gather advanced tools, build respectful and private spaces for learning, conversation and mentorship, and crown the effort with the capacity to host students, family members and researchers for overnight stays when an immersive and intensive learning experience is optimal.

Twenty people become blind each week in the Greater Bay Area. Each year, a thousand Bay Area neighbors enter their blindness journey tentative, afraid and with a deep need to learn techniques and gain the self-confidence to live life to the fullest. This is our mission; and with your support, we will build a new headquarters to serve blind kids, teens, adults and seniors for the next century of innovative practices impacting the blind community globally.

Contributions to the Campaign for a 21st Century LightHouse will provide tangible benefits for the blind kids to seniors that benefit from the joy and learning of the LightHouse for the next century.
