Production and Warehouse Assistant

POSITION: Production and Warehouse Assistant

REPORTS TO: Plant Manager, Assistant Plant Manager, Lead Person & MOD.

STATUS: Non-Exempt

WC CLASS: Warehouse

ROLE OVERVIEW: (Main Duties)

The Production Assistant is responsible to check product, tape full boxes and then place those boxes on a pallet. The assistant will stretch wrap the pallet when it becomes full. The Warehouse Assistant will then proceed to pull, pack and fill product and work on a production line.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is designated to provide work experience for an individual who is blind or visually impaired.

Education:     High School Diploma

Experience:   Will train

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The assistant will check their supplies, making sure that they have enough for the day
  • The Production Assistant will report any out of spec. or suspected out of spec conditions to the Machine Operator at once
  • The person in this role will work on production lines filling, packing and shipping
  •  The assistant will sort and pack boxes
  • The assistant will make boxes
  • The Production Assistant, upon filling a box, will remove it and put an empty box in its place
  • The assistant will perform cycle counts
  • The assistant will sweep, clean, and perform housekeeping when there is down time
  • The person in this role will rework product
  • The Production Assistant will neatly stack the full carton onto the pallet.
  •  Using a hand jack, the assistant will remove the completed full pallet and put it in the designated area for stretch wrapping
  •  After the pallet is removed for stretch wrapping, the assistant will place a new pallet down for the next products
  •  The assistant will stretch wrap the full pallet to be warehoused
  • The person in this role will keep the area neat and tidy. The assistant will empty the trash daily
  •  The Production Assistant should let their supervisor know when their task has been completed
  •  The assistant should exercise caution around machines and when the forklift is operating in the area
  • The Production Assistant should report all accidents or safety concerns to their supervisor at once
  • The assistant should never perform a task if they feel it is unsafe until they talk to a supervisor
  • The assistant will lift or carry 60 lbs. throughout the day
  • The assistant will also stand for long periods and climb up and down ladders
  • The Production Assistant is expected to complete any other duties as assigned by their supervisor

Orientation and Mobility Specialist

POSITION:   Orientation and Mobility Specialist (bilingual preferred)

REPORTS TO:  Assistant Director Rehabilitation Services

STATUS:  Exempt

 

Role Overview

The Certified Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS or NOMC) provides in-person and virtual orientation and mobility to blind, low-vision deaf-blind youth, adults, and seniors from diverse backgrounds. The Orientation and Mobility Specialist will conduct assessments and provide training reflecting recent and progressive travel and orientation techniques and trends, focusing on student’s travel needs in the home, work, academic sites, and community.

The OMS must have the ability to assess and teach to differing skill levels, as well as to train on varied mobility devices and options such as: monocular, tints, GPS Apps, and use (i.e., Blind Square, Google Maps), Audible Pedestrian Signals and tactile maps (public streets, transit hubs, and public spaces and buildings). It is expected that all OMS’s provide instruction that takes into consideration understanding of student’s abilities and potential concomitant health conditions. Knowledge and understanding of primary eye conditions, including Cortical Visual Impairment is imperative. Knowledge of health associated with aging, head injury, diabetes and mental health and developmental disabilities is extremely helpful. Together the OMS and the student develop and revise goals to achieve the student’s intended mobility outcomes.

Flexibility and ‘thinking outside of the box’ are essential to this position. The philosophy of our trainers is that of facilitation of skills for independent (as defined with each student) travel. Our team also provides training with the student using a training shade where best applied for learning and instruction. The OMS must be able to work with and provide information and training to family and friends, community members, volunteers and service providers and effectively communicate and collaborate with referral agencies in providing services to shared students. The cross-cultural community of the LightHouse is increasing, and second language ability is preferred and cultural sensitivity to disability is integral to this position. The duties of the OMS may include (but are not limited to): conducting of assessments, writing individual training plans with the student, and facilitating individual and group instruction as needed. Additionally, the OMS may be requested to coordinate specific training projects with colleagues or represent the LightHouse in the community, this may be ongoing or short term. Orientation and mobility instruction may occur virtually (Zoom), on-site of LightHouse facilities, in the home, workplace, academic sites or the student’s community, including travel on all forms of San Francisco Bay Area-wide public transportation and Paratransit.

While most of the training occurs throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the OMS must be open and flexible to working from all LightHouse locations and sometimes beyond, as needed for special projects. Additionally, the OMS must be able to balance their training schedule to accommodate week-long seminar training Enchanted Hills Camp and Retreat; immersive training in San Francisco with our Guide Dogs for the Blind collaboration (orientation skill development) or travel to locations outside the greater bay area overnight to accommodate training for students who live outside the area. Training may occur in either urban (all areas of a city) or rural settings. The OMS may also be asked to teach and assess for urgent and basic daily living skills. The OMS is a professional within the Lighthouse Training Team, sharing resources, recommendations, referrals, and skills with each other. All our training team practice hone their teaching skills under occlusion as needed, providing feedback, and discussing strategies for training.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education or equivalent:  University Master’s Degree or BA in Orientation and Mobility or MA/BA with National Orientation and Mobility Certification (NOMC) from the National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NBPCB). If, COMS, then Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) preferred (needed to work with VA).

Experience:  A minimum of two years teaching Orientation and Mobility preferred. A history of teaching basic independent living skills (home-to-work skills) with adults and/ or seniors necessary.

Other: Fluency (speaking, reading, and writing) in Spanish, Cantonese, ASL or Russian preferred. Multicultural teaching experience preferred; excellent verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills to relate to staff, blind and visually impaired students, and persons in the community with varied backgrounds and viewpoints. Strong user of Smart Phone/Tablets, Microsoft Office Programs and databases and virtual platform(s) (Zoom), essential. Ability to travel throughout the LightHouse service area (private vehicle or public transit). Current CPR and First Aid certification required.

An ability to formulate individual, sequential training plans. Knowledge of Smart Phone accessibility related to O&M and Braille/tactile mapping experience desired.

Job Responsibilities and Qualifications:

  • Assess individual needs of students and set goals for instruction.
  • Provide professionally written student assessments, goal development, and training summaries / recommendations, monthly to all third-party contracting sources (such as the Department of Rehabilitation, Veterans Administration, Regional Center, and other third-party vendors).
  • Maintain weekly and monthly database entries regarding units of service provided to students, along with notes, goal-planning and reports for all direct services provided.
  • Function as Agency liaison in traffic, community transportation services and auditory signal issues or projects as requested.
  • Provide cane travel, route travel with dog guide users & teams and human guide instruction.
  • Maintain updated information regarding Paratransit programs, providing registration assistance and training in the programs, as necessary.
  • Provide orientation and route training in all environments and on various forms of public transit.
  • Assess for and teach basic and essential independent living skills to blind and low-vision students such as labeling, money organization, use of an ATM, and home safety practices (5-minute lessons).
  • Provide training in a range of all indoor and out-of-door environments: all urban city environments, rural environments, professional and academic campuses and buildings, homes, skilled nursing facilities etc.
  • Facilitate or co-facilitate classes, including our Changing Visions, Changing Lives immersion and community workshops.
  • Conduct outreach, training and collaboration with local universities and school’s disabled student programs, in providing campus orientation.
  • Conduct student home safety assessments and community agency environmental evaluations.
  • Provide consultation and/or training to staff in community agencies regarding environmental modifications and strategies in collaborating with persons who are blind or low vision.
  • Attend and participate in All-Staff meetings, monthly Consumer Review, and departmental meetings (Training Services).
  • Timely completion of requisite documentation, billing, reports etc. in a timely manner (monthly). All completed in Salesforce Database.
  • Participate in Agency public outreach and education as requested.
  • Maintain timely communication and responses to students (within 48 hours of referral).
  • Maintain professional communication via e-mail and voice mail on a timely and ongoing basis.

Supervisory Responsibility

Supervise and provide instruction to Orientation and Mobility Interns as requested. (Must have MA/ACVREP Certification plus three years’ experience for Intern supervision.)

Physical Requirements

Physical stamina and the ability to work indoors and outdoors and walk up to 7 hours at a time (all terrains including stairs). Ability to work during inclement weather. Requires the ability to lift 25 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis with the assistance of another person as needed. 

Working Conditions 

The Orientation and Mobility Specialist is expected to follow directions from state, local government, and public health officials regarding the wearing of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). As a result, this job may be required to be performed using a mask and gloves for the protection of this employee, all Lighthouse employees, and students. The OMS will follow all COVID-19 Guidelines in working with students, including ensuring all students (and family members of students) wear PPE during their training with the student (at the LightHouse and/or the home of the student).

Maintenance Grounds Technician Landscaper

POSITION:                    Maintenance Grounds Technician Landscaper

JOB PURPOSE:

LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, headquartered in downtown San Francisco, is looking for a Full-Time Maintenance Grounds Technician (MGT), to work at our 311-acre resort, Enchanted Hills Camp in Napa, California.  The MGT will perform skilled work in the maintenance and care of the natural environment at our camp in Napa. The focus will be primarily on landscaping. This will include the upkeep of the grounds and landscape.

We are searching for a talented and dedicated landscaper to join our team. You will perform a range of general lawn maintenance duties including applying fertilizers, maintaining the landscape design, removing weeds and dead plants, and supervising repairs. With over 300 acres, fire abatement and knowledge of poisonous plants is needed as well.

As the landscaper, you will ensure the growth and vibrancy of our plants, flowers, lawn, and garden structures. The ideal candidate will be creative, with excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education or equivalent:

  • High School degree or GED equivalent

Experience:

A minimum of 2 years’ experience in a landscaping or groundskeeping role

The MGT will perform regular and directed grounds and landscape maintenance. This will require experience in using mowing, trimming, edging and other landscaping tools.

Although the position will have regular hours, occasional morning or evening duties do require an on-site presence. As a result, this position is accompanied with an offer of free onsite housing for the technician. This is specified in our Housing Agreement which will be discussed during the interview process.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to safely operate maintenance equipment including lawnmowers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers and other tools and equipment
  • Strong knowledge of pest management and basic lawn maintenance
  • High attention to detail with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to sit at a desk and perform computer-intensive work for long periods of time; operate standard office equipment

The Maintenance Ground Technician will be expected to:

  • Demonstrate Physical stamina and the ability to work outdoors for long periods of time
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry groundskeeping supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis
  • Prolonged walking or standing, and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching daily
  • Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual, electrical and/or gasoline-powered groundskeeping equipment and machines
  • Requires the ability to access facilities and areas which may only be accessible by climbing stairs or by climbing ladders to a height of 20 feet (e.g., for tree trimming)
  • Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as the work is performed primarily out-of-doors, year-round
  • The MGT must be able to work outdoors for long periods, including occasional work in rain, cold, heat and windy conditions

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Fire Abatement
  • The Maintenance Grounds Technician will place a strong focus on Fire Abatement duties as a high priority for this role. Those duties will include:
    • String line trimming
    • Chainsaw to log splitting
    • Chipping, debris clean up
  • Landscape
  • The Maintenance Grounds Technician will upkeep the landscape
    • These duties include mowing, trimming, tree maintenance, edging of landscape
    • Thinning and cleaning flower beds and other grounds by hand or utilizing proper tools and equipment; and setting up, adjusting, repairing and maintenance of these tools and equipment
  • Apply pesticides to remove harmful insects such as mosquitos, wasps, and ticks
  • Conduct general maintenance duties such as cleaning walkways, fixing fountains, and other duties
  • Apply fertilizer to help enhance growth
  • Take out weeds and dead plants
  • Trim overgrown limbs, hedges, and leaves
  • Uphold the landscaping design and ensure plant growth
  • Plant new decorative bushes, flowers, plants, and shrubs
  • Supervise maintenance repairs to equipment, landscape structures, outdoor furniture, and walkways
  • Advise clients on how to look after the landscape
  • Coordinate with garden designers and landscape architects to ensure the garden meets the client’s expectations
  • Janitorial work that includes but is not limited to:
    • Plunging toilets
    • Cleaning and sanitizing of Restroom floors, toilets, sinks, and showers
    • Replace toilet paper in bathrooms as needed
    • Collect all trash, including trash from dog refuse collection bins
  • The MGT should possess a valid California Driver’s license and a willingness to drive camp vehicles
  • Possession of a Class B Driver’s License would be a plus for the Maintenance Grounds Technician
  • Possession or willingness to train to get water treatment certification is highly desirable

Assistant Facilities Manager

JOB PURPOSE:

LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, headquartered in downtown San Francisco, is looking for a full time Assistant Facilities Manager to fill a valued role in our growing organization in San Francisco, CA.

Under the Assistant Director of Facilities supervision, the Assistant Facilities Manager oversees the operations of staff and custodial coordination’s on floors 1-11 of the 1155 LightHouse Building, as well as the common building areas that include the main lobby and garage. In addition, this position provides support to the Facilities and Events departments. Under direct supervision of the Assistant Director, the Assistant Facilities Manager will assist with overseeing all needed onsite coordination and facilities related requests. This position will assist with the set up and break down and coordination of janitorial services for event spaces, work in tandem with the Director of Rehab to coordinate and schedule needed janitorial maintenance in the student residences, report safety concerns, supervise and ensure the janitorial cages and supply closet spaces are being kept maintained, cleaned and orderly; manage and coordinate special janitorial projects, (i.e., carpet cleaning and stair maintenance).

The main work site for this position is at the LightHouse Building in San Francisco. However, the Assistant Facilities Manager may collaborate on janitorial concerns and the use of satellite space for other locations as needed per Manager’s request.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education or equivalent:

A BA degree in related field preferred. Supervisor, Managerial or comparable experience required in related field.

Required Experience:

2-4 years of supervisorial experience with a preferred minimum of 5 years of hands-on janitorial experience. Knowledge of waste management requirements (landfill, compost, recycling), and custodial or grounds maintenance. Previous experience overseeing custodial work; Meeting and training staff; Maintaining a high standard of safety; cleanliness, and efficiency. Knowledge and experience as a hiring manager and compliance in the workplace. Knowledge of working within a high-rise building or managing multiple building floors; vendor management; workorder navigation and task delegation; site or building walk-throughs and assessments; event assist/ setup/breakdown; and office space restoration and reset. A demonstrated history of performing minor maintenance repairs in restrooms and buildings, i.e., replace light bulbs, correct placement of ceiling tile, replacing batteries in automatic fixtures, etc. This position must be customer service-centric with an understanding of LightHouse Mission Statements and our Core Values.

Other:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift and transport up to 30 pounds regularly, with occasional transporting up to approximately 50 pounds may be required.
  • Physical mobility and endurance to perform tasks while standing or walking for long periods of time (four hours or more).
  • Ability to safely and properly use cleaning tools, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Solid physical endurance sufficient for occasional prolonged standing, bending, stooping, and stretching.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to manipulate equipment.
  • Ability and willingness to work with exposure to environmental conditions.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assistant Facilities Manager duties are the following:

  • Post-COVID environment;
    • Will collaborate with Facilities to create and implement virus sanitization measures per established lighthouse protocols and CDC guidelines.
    • Training staff in anti-viral techniques and education on the Covid virus including new and developing state and local health orders.
    • Scheduling frequent and repeated touch-point cleanings.
  • Will be expected to work occasional evenings to observe and supervise evening staff. In addition, the Assistant Facilities Manager will be expected to work on occasional weekends and work overtime as needed.
  • Must be flexible and reliable.
  • Be willing to be on call for emergencies and perform janitorial duties when needed.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of any last minute, unforeseen changes in staff attendance.
  • Keep inventory and oversee the organization of janitorial supplies in cages, closets, janitorial bins, and other needed office supplies on floors 9-11.
  • Office Supply Procurement; Receive and place orders for 1155 office supplies for all departments.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail, excluding departmental packages.
  • Coordinate all janitorial staff work schedules including approving all vacation and sick time as well as time sheet corrections and payroll approvals on ADP for each pay period.
  • Coordinate staff one on one check-ins and team meetings.
  • Schedule quarterly trainings with supervision from the Assistant Facility Director.
  • Respond promptly and coordinate the execution of all janitorial request and work orders.
  • Remain in direct communication with the janitorial team, Management, as well as Security and Property Management through telephone calls, texts and /or email.
  • Expected to participate in all Fire, Life Safety Trainings, and act as an active member of the Fire, Life Safety Team.
  • Expected to assist in the hiring process; employee relations; documentation and disciplinary actions.
  • Assist with employee evaluations and employee KPI’s.
  • Expected to collaborate with Management on ways to implement procedures, improve janitorial operations, inventory, safety, and workflow.
  • Manage and oversee janitorial checklists as well as create, edit, and distribute any other necessary janitorial documents using basic computer programs i.e., word, excel, PowerPoint.
  • Work closely with the building engineer to perform miscellaneous building maintenance requests i.e., changing out lights, batteries, etc.
  • Perform equipment checks.
  • Remain in compliance with all safety and security policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to overall program excellence and professionalism and setting expectation for reporting staff to follow.
  • Must focus on customer service while communicating with staff and interacting with tenants and individuals in the building.
  • Be aware of janitorial scope of work (i.e., what is and what is not within the scope of work).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The Assistant Facilities Manager will be expected to follow directions from state, local government, and public health officials regarding the wearing of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). As a result, this job may be required to be performed using a mask and gloves for the protection of this employee, the janitorial staff, and all Lighthouse employees. The Assistant Facilities Manager will ensure that all members of the Janitorial staff are always wearing PPE during their workday.
