Love amid loss: The ‘Enchanted’ Napa story of Matthew and Kristen Beard

Love amid loss: The ‘Enchanted’ Napa story of Matthew and Kristen Beard

LightHouse Staff Note: The following is an excerpt from an article from the  Napa Valley Register.

By Jennifer Huffman, Buss sines Editor, Napa Valley Register

Matthew and Kristen Beard have only been married since 2022 but have already faced many significant life challenges, including one of Napa’s worst natural disasters.

Matthew, 37, is the head chef at the Enchanted Hills Camp, located at 3410 Mount Veeder Road in the forested hills northwest of Napa. Kristen Beard, 34, is a social worker based in Napa County. The two live in the city of Napa.

Enchanted Hills chef Matthew Beard and his wife Kristen, a former Enchanted Hills counselor, pause while on a walk on the grounds of Enchanted Hills on Mount Veeder outside Napa on Friday, Feb. 7. The camp was built for blind and low-vision people of all ages. Matthew Beard is legally blind.

Both have a connection to Enchanted Hills Camp that is deeply personal.

Enchanted Hills is the only camp serving blind and low-vision babies, youth, adults and their families in the western United States.

Rose Resnick, a blind musician, teacher and philanthropist, founded Enchanted Hills in 1950. The 311-acre property belongs to the nonprofit LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.

Matthew is legally blind. “I have an eye condition called aniridia which is (the) lack of an iris, the colored part of your eye,” he explained.

He grew up in Sacramento and first connected with Enchanted Hills Camp as a camper, and later as a counselor.

Kristen’s mother had been a counselor at the camp in the 1980s, which inspired her daughter to work at Enchanted Hills as well. Kristen, who is from Santa Cruz, later served as head female counselor while Matthew was also on the staff.

It’s time once again for the Gill Benefit Concert to benefit Enchanted Hills Camp. This year’s concert features Mollie and The Sweet Shop Boy, with a special appearance by Anne Gill.

This year’s concert takes place on Saturday, February 22, at 7:30 pm at the Menlo School, Martin Family Hall, 50 Valparaiso Ave. Atherton, 94027.

Seating is on a first come, first seated basis. Those planning to attend should contact Nancy Gill at gillnancyg@gmail.com or 650-906-5264; please indicate numbers attending and provide your contact information.

Here is a message from Steve and Nancy Gill about the Gill Benefit Concerts:

In 1997, shortly after she graduated from Los Altos High School, our 18-year-old daughter, Anne Gill, was in a near-fatal car accident that left her blind and brain injured. When Anne returned home In the spring of 1998, we were frustrated to discover that while many programs either served those with traumatic brain injuries or helped the blind and visually impaired, very few resources were designed to help people with multiple disabilities, like our daughter. Therefore, we were delighted to find out that the LightHouse for the Blind offered a session at its Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC) for visually impaired adults with other disabilities as well. Anne and other participants enjoyed spending five days in the Napa hills, participating in activities like horseback riding, swimming and hiking with a remarkable, inspiring staff. Our gratitude for the camp’s existence, our appreciation for the incredible patience and compassion of the staff (many of whom are visually impaired), and our desire to support the special needs session at EHC inspired Steve, a veteran Bay Area actor/singer and the founder of Menlo School’s Fine Arts Program, to organize the first benefit concert for the LightHouse in 1999. The Lighthouse has used the proceeds from these concerts to provide scholarships to those attending Enchanted Hills Camp and help fund rebuilding projects in the aftermath of the devastating 2017 fires. For this year’s benefit, Steve and his good friends, singer Mollie Hudner Thomson, guitarist Bob Feiner, and drummer Steve Beitler, will present “On The Road Again, Willie Nelson’s Letters to America.” We hope that you enjoy the show. Your contributions will help the LightHouse continue providing a very special experience to blind adults like Anne.”

If you are unable to attend the concert but would like to make a donation, please send a check to:

Important Information for Our Campers

At EHC, we are dedicated to ensuring every camper has a safe and enjoyable experience. While our staff is committed to providing support, it’s important that campers should be capable of independently managing daily tasks such as grooming, toileting, dressing, feeding, morning and nighttime routines (e.g., brushing teeth), and basic navigation. Our summer staff will offer assistance as needed. Please understand that we are unable to consistently offer one-on-one assistance to campers. Therefore, all campers must be able to manage their daily living needs with minimal aid. If additional support is necessary, campers are required to bring a personal aide. There is no charge for an aide to attend camp, but they must pass our background screening protocols.

Youth Session

Monday July 14 – Saturday July 19

Campers that are in 1st – 8th grade will participate in a variety activities, including campfires, swimming, horseback riding, drama, arts and crafts, and adaptive sports. These activities are designed to foster independence as campers explore new challenges alongside their peers and build lasting friendships. A key aspect of the Youth Session experience is the support campers receive from both their peers and mentors who are blind or have low vision. These experienced counselors provide guidance and serve as role models, helping campers navigate challenges, develop self-advocacy skills, and build a sense of community.

Youth Session will be run simultaneously with Teen Session but will follow a unique daily schedule, allowing more dedicated time for youth campers to connect with peers of their own age. Campers will be grouped by age and assigned to cabins located in a separate area of camp from the Teen campers, providing a supportive and age-appropriate environment. Youth and Teen campers will only interact during shared meals and select evening activities. The combination of peer connection, mentorship, and tailored programming creates a dynamic and enriching experience that helps youth campers build confidence, foster independence, and develop skills that will serve them well beyond their time at camp.

Teen Session

Monday, July 14 – Saturday, July 26

Teen Session (9th-12th grade) offers a dynamic, two-week experience filled with a wide range of engaging programs, including campfires, swimming, drama, arts and crafts, and adaptive sports. Campers will be encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, face new challenges, and build independence alongside new friends in a supportive environment.

A key focus of this session is fostering personal growth and leadership development. Campers will deepen their understanding and acceptance of their vision loss, enhancing their self-confidence and sense of empowerment. Opportunities for leadership roles abound, allowing participants to practice valuable skills such as public speaking, organization, activity planning, and facilitating group discussions. By assisting peers and staff, campers will cultivate teamwork and mentorship abilities that contribute to success in education, careers, and life.

This summer, alongside the cherished camp traditions that keep teens coming back, we’re excited to introduce a new woodworking session during the second week of the teen session. Led by a craftsman and blind woodworking instructor this immersive experience is designed to teach blind and low vision teens basic woodworking skills, allowing them to create something meaningful to take home. Teens can sign up for one or both sessions (please complete both registrations if you wish to attend both). However, space in the woodworking program is limited, so we encourage early registration to secure your spot.

The Passing of the Torch at EHC: Jamey Gump Takes Over for Tony Fletcher as Camp Director

The Passing of the Torch at EHC: Jamey Gump Takes Over for Tony Fletcher as Camp Director

In  1989, Tony Fletcher started his career with us as the Youth Coordinator at the Rose Resnick Center which later merged into the LightHouse for the Blind in 1993. It was there that Tony worked alongside Enchanted Hills Camp founder, Rose Resnick, and learned from her about the importance of creating a safe and nurturing blind-positive environment that challenged campers of all ages to explore, develop skills, and build confidence and self-esteem in a traditional summer camp environment. This had been Rose’s mission that Tony would continue after Rose Resnick’s passing in 2006.

Now, after more than 25 years as Camp Director, Tony has stepped down from the role, although he remains involved with EHC as Alumni Coordinator. As we bid a fond farewell to Tony as Camp Director, we would also like to introduce you to our new Camp Director, long-time member of the EHC community, Jamey Gump.

Jamey’s history with EHC began with him being a camper in 2002. After several years of attending junior high and then teen sessions, he went on to become a camp counselor. Jamey would hold a variety of positions at camp, including working as various area leaders, and was even known to support the kitchen and maintenance staffs. Jamey shared with us why he came back to camp again and again, his thoughts on Tony and what he looks forward to in his new role.

“EHC has made me feel invited, made me feel like an active member of the community, and it’s a place where I can give back. It’s helped me grow as a blind person and I think EHC is one of the best places for blind people to connect with one another.

“I never saw myself becoming Camp Director, because Tony was always there. He was the right person to be leading camp. For many years people in the EHC community had encouraged me to become the next Camp Director, but it wasn’t until Tony said he was stepping down and said ‘Jamey, I would like you to be that person, if you’re open to it.’ At that moment, I had no other answer in my mind but ‘Yes.’

“Since October it has been a whirlwind of excitement. Between the new programs and learning how the old programs work in the new [rebuilt after the 2017 wildfires] space and figuring out the camp applications and connecting with all the different players, it’s truly been really, really exciting. Every day I learn something new.”

One of the many things Jamey is looking forward to working on is raising funds for the naming of the Nursing Office, in the Mayacamas Dining Hall, after longtime camp nurse Bill Simpson. Bill first joined EHC as a volunteer in 2000 and served as Camp Nurse from 2001-2023, making him the longest-tenured Camp Nurse in EHC’s history. Jamey is pleased to share than an anonymous donor has pledged a matching gift of $5000 for the Nursing Office.

We’d be remiss if we didn’t share some thoughts from Tony as well.

“I directed Enchanted Hills Camp from 1998 through the summer of 2024. It’s been a very fast 26 years. It has been so wonderful to work with so many smart, creative and fun folks over the years, and to do so in an environment that is stunningly beautiful is a gift of enormous magnitude for a career. That being said, my connection to EHC has always been to the campers and to Dr. Rose Resnick. I had no clue what impact she would have on my life, or the impact of the people associated with EHC would have on my life as well. I remember Rose telling me that what we do in our line of work is a privilege; never truer words have been spoken about my term as Camp Director.

“I am so happy that now Jamey has stepped into that role; he has been associated with camp for over 20 years, and I remember him as a camper with the biggest smile, warmest disposition, and the charismatic ability to make everyone welcome in his presence. He has my 100% support in his new role of leadership. Our community is in good hands.”

Thank you, Tony, for all your years of service as EHC Director. Jamey, we’re looking forward to seeing what you do at the helm.

Now we leave you with the lyrics from the EHC song:

I want to wake up at Enchanted Hills
Where the songbird sings hello
And the sun comes a creeping
Into where I’m sleeping, and the redwoods whisper low
I want to wander through the wildwoods
Where the rippling waters flow
And come trickling back to Enchanted Hills
To the camp that we love so.

Help LightHouse Enhance Wayfinding at Enchanted Hills Camp This Giving Tuesday

Help LightHouse Enhance Wayfinding at Enchanted Hills Camp This Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is tomorrow December 3!

This year, we’re inviting you to be a part of exciting fundraising efforts in support of LightHouse’s Pathways to Independence project. Our project goal is to raise $75,000 for wayfinding systems at Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC).

This essential project aims to enhance navigational accessibility across our 311-acre campgrounds through Braille signage, tactile maps, and implementation of other accessibility systems, empowering campers and visitors to travel independently, build confidence and fully participate in EHC’s immersive natural experiences.

Helen Schneider, Senior Project Manager at Perkins&Will, the architect and design firm that worked on the fire rebuild of camp, commented on how the rebuild process laid the groundwork for future wayfinding projects at EHC.

“It was really important to LightHouse that the rebuild safeguarded the camp against future wildfires, and made an environment that’s more accessible for people who are blind or have low vision. [During the rebuild process] we built a 3D model of the site so we could communicate the really diverse terrain. Anytime we were showing renderings [to the Vision Design Committee for the EHC rebuild], we would come up with a very descriptive explanation of what was shown on the screen.”

Jerry Kuns, a member of the Vision Design Committee who is blind said, “Working with Perkins&Will has been a wonderful experience for me. Good members of the team spent time learning a bit about how we travel. The sensitivity that was given, having people take the time to do things with us, instead of to us or for us, has been absolutely magnificent.”

Giving Tuesday Donation Incentives

We deeply appreciate every dollar amount, large or small, donated by our community on Giving Tuesday. This year, we are offering two exciting donation incentives.

Donate $75 or more (whether it be a one-time gift or recurring monthly gift totaling $75 or more) anytime on Giving Tuesday, and your name will be entered in a drawing for a LightHouse/EHC schwag box containing a LightHouse puffy jacket and some branded camp items.

Donate $1000 or more (whether it be a one-time gift or recurring monthly gift totaling $1000 or more) anytime on Giving Tuesday, and you will be invited to a special picnic at Enchanted Hills Camp in 2025.

Thank you for your support of Enchanted Hills Camp this Giving Tuesday.

An Enchanted Update from EHC!

An Enchanted Update from EHC!

A new structure at EHC with external wood paneling, large windows, and is surrounded by redwood trees and newly paved paths

After an incredibly productive autumn and a peaceful holiday break, our friends at Wright Construction have made their way back up Mt. Veeder Road as our re-building and re-imagination projects at Enchanted Hills Camp continue. We are thrilled to share with our beloved EHC Community the progress we’ve made up at camp and what new, beautiful and accessible features our campers can look forward to experiencing this summer.

After breaking ground on the new Redwood Grove in November, we are excited to report the speed and grace at which this project is moving along—thanks in large part to all our generous donors at the LightHouse Gala who raised their paddles to contribute to the execution of this breathe-taking space. We can’t wait until these gorgeous redwood benches are filled with happy campers sharing lifelong memories together!

Our family cabins are nearly finished! Accessibility and innovative creativity can be found in every nook and cranny of these home away from homes. We can’t wait to welcome families in to explore and enjoy a cozy stay in these new little cottages!

Our campers aren’t the only ones with new and improved spaces to explore. Staff Commons is awaiting summer counselors to inhabit this beautiful new structure! For those interested in working at Enchanted Hills Camp this summer, be on the lookout for job postings and details in the coming months.

From the freshly paved roads to newly cut trails, our sparking pool and ponds to cozy evening retreats, to our structures built for group gatherings and friendship forming, we are proud of every inch of this incredible 311 acre space. The thoughtful architects at Perkins & Will have put their hearts and souls into creating a fully accessible space for blind and low vision patrons that is as beautiful as it is functional.

“We’re not creating forms and shapes for the sake of aesthetics alone. Rather, we’re thinking about straightforward navigability,” says Helen Schneider, EHC’s lead architect with Perkins & Will. “A lot of the effort with our master plan is creating cane-detectable paths throughout camp that will provide an accessible route from top to bottom.

“This summer, the anticipation at camp is reaching new heights as we eagerly await utilizing our brand-new and renovated buildings,” says Enchanted Hills Camp Director, Tony Fletcher. “The buzz is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about the promise of brand-new experiences and a comfortable and accessible atmosphere that these structures will bring. From new cabins, designed for comfort and camaraderie, to new program spaces set to enhance our camp experience. There are new memories and adventures waiting to unfold, making this summer an eagerly awaited chapter in our camp’s history.”

EHC Summer 2024 is just a few months away! This year’s session schedule is posted on the Enchanted Hills Camp website. Be sure to block off your calendars and reserve your spot at our enchanting redwood oasis this summer! Camp registration  is now open.

Enchanted Hills Camp Virtual Holiday Concert is December 7

For the fourth year in a row, alumni staff of Enchanted Hills Camp (EHC) wish to show their appreciation for the LightHouse community by hosting a free virtual EHC Alumni holiday concert. This year’s performers are Hanna Clemenson, Christina Daniels, Derek Dittmar, Rachael Grider, Mariana Sandoval and Masceo Williams.

Camp Director, Tony Fletcher says, “When we enter the cold and dark days of late fall and prepare for winter, many of the alumni of EHC truly look forward to any opportunities for us to gather and celebrate one of our favorite locations on earth. One of the special gatherings is the Virtual Holiday Concert. All the performers have deep connections to EHC as staff members, and for many, as former campers. This is a show built around gratitude. This year we focus on saying thank you to the many generous donors that supported Giving Tuesday for the LightHouse’s Little Learners Program that uses Enchanted Hills for a family camp weekend.

“We hope listeners will enjoy not only the music, but also the chance to hear and see the performers that have been their counselors and area leaders at EHC over the years.”
